Man wanted in connection with robbery at jewellers

Detectives investigating an armed robbery at a jewellers in Lutterworth have released CCTV images of a man they wish to identify and trace in connection with the incident.

The incident took place at Robinsons Jewellers in Church Street, Lutterworth at about 2.55pm on Thursday December 16.

A man entered the shop and threatened members of staff with a hammer and a weapon, believed to be a firearm, before stealing jewellery from a display.

The security guard managed to grab the bag containing the jewellery from the offender but was assaulted during the incident and received minor injuries to his head.

The offender then made off empty handed in a black Kia Sportage 4x4 car, which had a partial registration number of BF56. The car was being driven by another man who had parked further down Church Street.

The man who committed the robbery has been described as being dark skinned and about 6 tall. He was wearing a latex mask over his face giving the impression he was light skinned and bald. He wore narrow rimmed glasses, a smart looking charcoal coat which was long and looked quite heavy, a scarf, white shirt, smart trousers which could possibly have been pin striped, black leather gloves and shoes.

The driver of the vehicle has been described as being a dark skinned man, about 61 tall and of medium build. He had dreadlocks which could be seen at the back of a green flat cap he was wearing, he was also wearing a dark scarf around his chin, dark tracksuit bottoms, which had a white line down the sides of the leg and black shoes or trainers.

The Kia was later recovered from a residents car park behind Rugby Road.

Officers investigating the incident have been studying CCTV footage from the area and believe the Kia was driven to the Jet Petrol Station in Lower Leicester Road at about 2.40pm on Thursday and the occupants purchased fuel.

Detective Inspector Dave Richardson is leading the investigation, he said: Although we dont advocate that people put themselves at risk in these situations, the security guard is to be commended for his brave actions in trying to stop the offender and I am relieved that he did not suffer any serious injury.

Offences of this nature are fortunately extremely rare however for those involved this has been a frightening and traumatic experience and the perpetrators of this crime need to be caught and brought to justice.

I would urge people to have a look at the images and contact the police if they recognise anything about the man or his clothing, even the slightest of detail could help us.

We are also keen to speak to anyone who was in the Church Street area on Thursday afternoon and saw the vehicle or the occupants acting suspiciously.

Did you see the car or occupants at the petrol station in Lower Leicester Road or in the Rugby Road area later? If you can help then contact the police immediately. Any calls received will be treated in confidence.

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Peter Wheeler on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officers identification number 0307. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
