Nearly 200 people walked through a portable metal detector in Loughborough on Friday night as part of the polices Christmas crime prevention campaign.

The knife arch is being used in clubs to make sure the town remains a safe place to go out during the busy festive celebrations.

It was installed in the entrance to Vice Versa Nightclub on the High Street between 10pm and 12.30am on Friday 17th December 2010. During that time 187 people walked through it. A 37 year old man, who had come straight from work, handed over a Stanley knife, allen keys and a tape measure before he walked through the knife arch. He was formally warned about carrying his work tools in public and the knife was confiscated.

A 40 year old man was seen to walk away when he saw the arch and when he was searched he was found to be in possession of a small amount of cannabis and given a street caution.

PC 4616 Suzi Jackson, one of the town centre beat officers, said; Thankfully Loughborough doesnt have a knife problem and it is rare that we find people carrying weapons, however we knew this weekend would be one of the busiest of the year and that people could be travelling from all over Leicestershire to enjoy Loughboroughs night life.

Not only does the arch act as a deterrent it also reassures clubbers and party goers that we wont tolerate people carrying weapons in this town. I am really pleased with the results of Fridays operation.

I am grateful to the staff at Vice Versa for agreeing to use the arch in their premises and for working closely with us to ensure Loughborough remains a safe place visit.

Plans are in place to use the arch again in other venues in the near future.
