An advent calendar has been jointly launched by agencies in Leicester as part of a campaign to promote responsible drinking over the Christmas and New Year period.

Instead of a Christmas scene, each window on the calendar contains a short message offering information and advice regarding alcohol and the potential consequences of drinking to excess over the festive period.

The initiative which is supported by Leicestershire Constabulary, NHS Leicester City, the Safer Leicester Partnership Drug and Alcohol Action Team, Leicestershire and Rutland Probation Service, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, the University of Leicester and Students Union, De Montfort University and Students Union, and Leicester College forms part of a wider alcohol-awareness campaign for Christmas.

Councillor Wayne Naylor, Cabinet Lead for Community Safety and Health for Leicester City Council, said: This is the first time all the agencies in Leicester have come together to give key messages and advice regarding alcohol awareness and the potential consequences of drinking to excess over the Christmas and New Year period.

We dont want to stop people from enjoying a few drinks and having a good night out with friends, but it is important for everyone to drink responsibly - the consequences of misusing alcohol could lead to health problems, disorderly or illegal behaviour and possible police action. Clearly this impacts not just on the individual involved but on all the agencies in Leicester working to keep our city safe.

Chief Inspector Adam Streets from Leicestershire Constabulary said: People often change their behaviour when alcohol enters the equation. We want to reduce the harm people do to themselves and the impact their actions have on other members of the public out enjoying the festivities. You can protect yourself from the consequences of criminal action by taking some of the simple steps detailed in the advent calendar.

The campaign is targeted at Christmas party goers, students and those people at risk of committing alcohol-related crime and disorder.

Numerous initiatives and events are being run throughout December in support of the campaign including posters in pubs and clubs; Bluetooth messaging; Students Union safety days; Christmas advice cards issued to those arrested for alcohol-related offences and those on probation; a designated driver scheme; and police operations such as the use of metal detector arches in the city centre and the handing out of bottle tops to party goers to raise awareness of drink spiking.

Clare Mills, public health specialist in substance misuse for NHS Leicester City, said: In Leicester city one in five people drink more than double their daily limits. These people could be putting their health at risk now and in the future. Too many people dont know how to stick within the recommended alcohol limits. Drinking too much alcohol is the cause of many health problems and accidents, especially at this time of year.

Jit Pandya from De Montfort University said: Unfortunately for some students, alcohol is a huge part of the student experience. With the freedom of being away from home for the first time combined with lots of socialising and the availability of cheap alcohol, students can go out and consume excessive amounts of alcohol very cheaply.

Students are often criticised for drinking excessively. However like anyone, they need information on alcohol and the law to help them make informed choices.

Gill Miles, the Student Healthy Living Manager for the University of Leicester, added: The University of Leicester and the Students' Union are committed to supporting students to do well with their exams as they return to University after the Christmas vacation. Providing messages about how to stay safe whilst enjoying the Christmas season will be incorporated into the Students' Union 'Get Fit for Exams' campaign.
