1 December 2010Celebrate Christmas Past at Donington le Heath Manor House

Christmas is coming a little earlier this year at Leicestershires Donington le Heath Manor House and visitors can celebrate as the Manor brings Christmas past to life in three fantastic events.

On 3rd December early Music group Galliarda will be playing music with a Christmas flavour dating from the late medieval period through to the late 17th century. They play authentic instruments, some of which look most unusual to the modern eye, and together with a lovely singing voice their sound will transport the listener to the Renaissance courts of Europe. Performances will be at 3pm and 7.30pm and refreshments will be provided. Tickets must be booked through the Manor House in advance and are 12 for adults and 9 for children.

On Saturday and Sunday 4th and 5th December the Manor House is celebrating Christmas in Victorian Style. Radio Leicesters John Florence will be running the proceedings on Saturday and providing Christmas readings from the period. Between the readings there will be recitals of Christmas Carols from the Cadenza Singers and talks on how the Victorians changed Christmas celebrations from the traditions of the past to the rituals we know today.

On both days there will also be a selection of traditional Christmas games to enjoy, as well as festive stalls selling Christmas gifts.

Sunday sees more readings and talks, Carols sung by members of The Friends and local Victorian re-enactment group The Chatelaines, who will also be performing Victorian Charades for the audience to identify.

Christmas at the Victorian Manor is free and booking is not required.

On the evening of the 7th December, we will be revealing what Christmas was like for a wealthy Victorian lady in an entertaining and illustrated talk at 7.30pm. Tickets are 3.50 and must be booked in advance.

Richard Knox, Keeper of Donington le Heath Manor House said: "For the season the Manor House is decorated with tradition greenery from the gardens, giving a spectacular mixture of sites and smells as visitors move around the house. For many of our regular visitors the Christmas season starts at Christmas at the Manor, which has remained very popular for the last ten years."

Visitors should be aware that the main event room is up difficult stairs.
