Youngsters in Kegworth are boosting their road safety knowledge and gaining practical skills to help them 'be safe and be seen'.

Five and six-year-old children from Kegworth Primary School have been taking part in the County Councils 'First Steps' pedestrian training which reinforces safe walking in the dark, and allows children to better understand the dangers they could encounter when crossing the road.

Road safety tutor Jan Murby has been leading the weekly sessions for pupils at Kegworth with help from Nicola Stanhope, the local Police Community Support Officer (PCSO).

The training involves volunteers from the school walking with children to nearby roads where they learn about traffic, road markings and crossing the road in the safest places including using crossing facilities. Children are encouraged to use the green cross code and to hold hands with a familiar adult when they cross the road.

The schools final session is this Thursday (25th November) and will include the role of their school crossing patrol. They will be explaining to children how they can cross the road outside the school gates in a safer way. This session will help the children become more familiar with the school crossing patrol and reveal how they can provide a helping hand on the school journey.

Lesley Pendleton, County Council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: With Christmas approaching and the nights getting darker earlier the First Steps training programme provides a timely reminder.

It is a key way of improving the safety of our children and provides them with an opportunity to learn and develop road safety skills that they can use now and throughout their lives."
