Life in a Roman Villa
Posted on 22/11/10
Community Services
Visitors to Harborough Museum will be invited to step back in time and sample what life was like in a Roman villa on Saturday 20 November. Staff will be showcasing the finer aspects of life 2000 years ago including the music, food and art which Romano-Britons enjoyed.
This free event takes place between 11am and 4pm and visitors are welcome to drop in throughout the day. Roman music group, Praecones Britanniae will be demonstrating the haunting sounds of musical instruments which may have filled the rooms of Roman villas across Britain.
Visitors can talk to Roman woman, Claudia, about how her household is run and what food the Romans ate for dinner. She might even serve up culinary delights such as stuffed dormouse and garum, a sauce made from rotten fish! Visit the Museum to find out what is on the menu.
Children will be able to create beautiful mosaics to take home in the craft activity area and get inspiration from the Museums real life mosaic from Drayton Villa in Leicestershire.
Visitors can end their day out by trying on replica Roman clothing and having their photograph taken whilst reclining on a lectus a Roman couch used for eating and sleeping.
David Sprason, Leicestershire County Councils Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities said: The Roman musicians at this event will give visitors to Harborough Museum a real feel for life in a Roman villa. Hearing instruments being played that were enjoyed by our Roman ancestors will make this a special event.
