Gary Howat sentenced at Leicester Crown Court

A Leicester man has been sentenced today (Friday November 19) after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a woman in Leicester.

Gary Howat (53) of Jersey Road, Leicester pleaded guilty to the charge against him at Leicester Crown Court on Monday July 26, 2010.

He has received an Indeterminate sentence for Public Protection with a minimum of one year before he is eligible for parole (minus what he has already served). He will also remain on licence for life.

This means that after a year the authorities will make a decision as to whether he still poses a threat to the public if they believe he is still a threat then he will remain in prison.

The sentence relates to an incident which took place around 10am on Tuesday January 26, 2010 as the 28-year-old victim walked along Marwell Close. Howat approached the victim from behind along an alleyway before sexually assaulting her and running off.

Over a week later, the victim was out walking with her friend along Abbey Lane when she recognised Howat as the man who had assaulted her. They called the police and officers from the neighbourhood team, who were aware of the previous assault and were paying extra attention to the area whilst on patrol, raced to the scene and arrested Howat after a short foot chase.

Detective Constable Chris Webster, who led the investigation, said: Excellent communication and hard work between the detectives investigating the incident, officers from the neighbourhood team and all those involved in the enquiry helped build such strong evidence against Howat that he was really left with no option other than to plead guilty.

Howats guilty plea also stopped the victim from the ordeal of having to face him again in court and relive what happened to her. We hope that todays sentence will help her to put the upsetting incident behind her and move on with her life.

As a Force we are committed to putting offenders before the courts who commit such crimes and do all we can to support victims through the justice process.
