1 November 2010The Romans, and your museum, need you!

Could you battle hordes of barbarians for the glory of Rome? Would you look good in a tunic and sandals? And could you interest others in the life and times of a Roman soldier?

The legionnaires of Rome were the greatest troops in the world 2000 years ago, and Harborough Museum is giving visitors the chance to find out more about them, and perhaps even sign up to become one themselves, at its free Roman Soldier Boot Camp event on Saturday November 6th between 11am and 4pm.

Roman soldier Flavinus will invite visitors to try on replica armour, handle the everyday equipment of a Roman recruit and see what he carried in his marching pack.

Younger recruits can also make their own equipment to take home, such as swords, shields and helmets, in the museums craft activity area.

Museum staff will also be on the look-out for particularly enthusiastic visitors during this event as they are keen to recruit more volunteers to help out at future events and education sessions.

Harborough Museum has recruited a number of volunteers over the past year who are then trained in aspects of Iron Age and Roman life and act as living history interpreters to bring the past to life for visitors. The museum is especially keen to find more volunteers with a passion for history who are willing to become Roman soldiers.

David Sprason, County Council Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities said: "The living history interpreters create a great atmosphere at Harborough Museum and this is a fantastic volunteer opportunity for people who want to sign up to do something different with their spare time.

Anyone interested in this volunteer opportunity can contact Helen Sharp on 01858 821087 or helen.sharp@leics.gov.uk.

The Hallaton Treasure, one of the most important Iron Age finds of recent years, is on permanent display at Harborough Museum in a purpose built gallery which was highly commended at the East Midlands Heritage Awards recently. It comprises over 5000 Iron Age and Roman coins, thousands of pig bones and a magnificent Roman cavalry parade helmet which were buried at a shrine used by the local British tribe, the Corieltavi.
