Sgt Helen Nurse hands out a crime prevention pack

Officers from Beaumont Leys police station are reminding motorists to keep their vehicles secure, in a bid to continue to decrease vehicle crime.

Officers have been patrolling Abbey Park today (Tuesday October 26), talking to motorists and giving out information and free crime prevention packs. The packs, which have been funded by the Abbey Ward Community Meeting (Abbey Ward Action Fund), consists of crime prevention information leaflets, ultra violet marker pens, No Valuables stickers and car air fresheners, which have a message reminding motorists to remove items from show.

Inspector Toby Day, Commander of Beaumont Leys Police Station, said: Leaving valuable items on display in your vehicle is an opportunity for thieves to break into your vehicle, cause damage, and steal your property. We are urging motorists to take simple measures to help prevent them from becoming a victim of crime.

Motorists are being urged to help police reduce car crime by following these simple security tips:

  • Immobilisers: fit an immobiliser and dont forget to activate it when you leave your vehicle.
  • Security devices: steering wheel and gear stick locks or other security devices are good.
  • Keep your keys safe: remove the ignition key every time you leave your vehicle. It only takes a few seconds for someone to jump into your car and drive away.
  • Doors and windows: always keep them locked when the vehicle is left unattended.
  • Etching: have the Vehicle Registration Number etched on to all glass surfaces including the side windows and headlamps.
  • Stereos: stereos are one of the most sought after items. Fit a removable stereo or one with a front that can be taken off and put somewhere safe (not in your glove box or under the seat, thieves know where to look!)
  • Belongings: dont leave any belongings on show. Even an old coat on the back seat is a target for someone to smash and grab.
  • Sat Navs: remove from display including sat nav cradles. Rub the windscreen to remove any suction marks left by the cradle.
  • Parking: use a garage to park your car overnight or when unattended for long periods. Park in busy or well-lit areas near CCTV cameras or in police-approved car parks if possible.
  • Register your valuables: you can register the serial numbers of any valuables (such as sat navs, iPods, mobile phones etc) for FREE at www.immobilise.com This is a national database used by police forces to reunite property with its owner in the event it is stolen and later recovered.
