6 October 2010Innovative plant welcomes first waste

A brand new, hi-tech composting plant designed to divert rubbish from landfill is opening its doors to Leicestershire waste.

The innovative facility at Cotesbach among the first of its kind in the country - will reduce the impact of waste on the environment as well as cut landfill tax bills.

Tomorrow, Leicestershire County Council Leader, David Parsons, will press the button to start the machinery and begin processing the first waste.

Under a County Council contract with Lafarge, the plant located at Lafarges waste management site and owned and run by New Earth Solutions - will deal with 50,000 tonnes of household rubbish a year, collected by district councils, which cannot be separated for recycling by residents.

The mechanical biological treatment facility developed and operated by New Earth Solutions uses technology which has been pioneered at the successful test plant in Dorset.

Household waste arrives in refuse trucks and has any recyclable materials removed before the remainder is composted in an enclosed building. The new plant is well screened from neighbours and includes an on-site air treatment plant to minimise odours.

The compost-like-product which is created will be used for land restoration, including Lafarges adjacent landfill site.

Mr Parsons said: "Leicestershire has one of the best recycling and composting rates in the UK but there will always be rubbish leftover which has to be treated and disposed of.

"Combined with our drive to reduce, recycle and compost more, this new contract will enable us to meet the challenging targets to reduce waste to landfill, and embrace pioneering technology."

Lafarge General Manager, Andrew Bate, said: We are proud to be partnering with Leicestershire County Council and New Earth Solutions in this innovative approach to managing waste that is not recycled at the kerbside.

New Earth Managing Director, Chris Cox, said: "Were delighted to be working with Leicestershire County Council and Lafarge. This facility demonstrates cutting-edge waste equipment."
