The boarded up house

A property in Coalville has been boarded up for 3 months after the police and partners succeeded in gaining a drug closure order in North West Leicestershire.

Following an extensive intelligence gathering operation, the police applied to Coalville Magistrates Court for a closure order on a terraced house in 108 Belvoir Road under the Anti Social Behaviour Act 2003.

On Friday 1st October 2010 officers presented evidence to Magistrates that the occupants of the house were allegedly involved in supplying the class A drug heroin. Magistrates heard evidence about large number of callers at the house, cars coming and going at all times of the day and night and complaints from local residents about noise and nuisance. Magistrates also heard that, local families and neighbours were disturbed by frequent knocking at the wrong doors and noise coming from the address. Coalville Magistrates agreed that the property should be closed down.

The same day (Friday 1st October 2010) officers took control of the property and boarded up the doors and windows to prevent access. The court order means the property must be left vacant for three months.

Inspector Chris Brown, Commander of North West Leicestershire local policing unit said; Drugs can have a detrimental impact in any community and can affect others who become involved in crime to fund their drug habit.

We dont have a major drugs issue here in North West Leicestershire but in this case the anti-social behaviour was so bad that we felt a Drug Closure Order was the best way forward. We are, and will continue to be, committed to reducing crime and anti-social behaviour in the community and are pleased that the local Court supported the application and made the decision to close the property.

Anyone who suspects that a premises is being used to deal drugs or has any information relating to criminal activity is urged to contact the police on (0116) 22 2 2222 or call Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
