Voice views on transport blueprint
Posted on 04/10/10

Travel is a conversation staple but by taking part in a new discussion, people can help shape Leicestershire's future transport network.
A major consultation launches this week on a travel vision for the next 15 years and people and business are urged to give their views.
Currently in its early stages, the blueprint aims to cut CO2, encourage sustainable travel, improve the environment, boost residents' health and support housing and economic growth.
Being drawn up by the County Council, the wide-ranging plan focuses on ways to work towards improving cycling, walking, public transport and roads, and confronts challenges ahead such as population growth, climate change and ensuring value for money.
Over the next three years, it suggests concentrating on tackling peak travel issues, maximising use of current park and rides, cutting road casualties, making sure new housing developments are supported by local jobs and essential facilities, plus other issues.
It also asks people to think about their travel choices and how they can help make the vision of an effective transport network a reality.
People can comment by:
- visiting the County Council's website at: www.leics.gov.uk/ltp
- picking up a leaflet from libraries, service shops, museums and parish councils
Lesley Pendleton, county council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "Transport is a vital factor in our everyday lives, enabling people to get to work, children to go to school and businesses to receive materials and distribute goods.
"In the short term, it's important to concentrate on getting the most of out of what we already have, reducing maintenance costs and minimising the transport impacts of a rising population.
"Ultimately, better transport is not an end in itself but plays a big part in making sure that Leicestershire remains an attractive place to live, work and visit, and I urge everyone to get involved and help us draw up a workable strategy."
The consultation on the local transport plan runs until 26th November and will help inform how the County Council takes forward the plans for Leicestershires transport.

Notes:
This is the County Council's third local transport plan and goes live on 1st April next year.
It is a long term strategy but will include shorter term, more detailed plans, the first covering 2011-14.
Detailed information on 2011/12 schemes depends on Government announcements on what money will be available.
Through its first two local transport plans, the County Council has:
- limited the growth in journey time lost in Loughborough, and, with Leicester City Council, improved journey times in central Leicestershire
- increased bus use and levels of cycling
- reduced the number of children travelling to school by car as the only passenger
- reduced the number of people killed or seriously injured on the roads
- improved the condition of roads, a large part of the footway network, bridges and traffic lights
Areas for improvement include:
- satisfaction with public transport information and local bus services
- the condition of some of the busiest urban area footways
- the replacement of street light columns
