Give nappies a 'real' chance

Leicestershire Councty Council

1 October 2010Give nappies a 'real' chance

Experts are demonstrating the simple knack needed for new-style real nappies and proving that complicated folding techniques are a thing of the past.

A week-long drive starts on Monday urging parents to turn away from disposables and features events full of tips on the green, cheaper alternative.

Led by the County Council, the push aims to highlight that not only can people reduce the amount of waste going to landfill but they could also save up to 500 a year.

Over 40 million disposables are thrown away in Leicestershire at a cost of around 1/2million and by the time a baby is potty trained, they could have used an astonishing 6,000 nappies.

Running until 9th October, Leicestershire's 'real nappy week' hopes to raise awareness of the fact that teething problems are common and signpost parents to the many networks able to provide simple solutions.

Parents being driven 'potty' by disposables can find out more about real nappies at two special events:

  • a 'real nappy social evening' between 6.30pm and 8pm on Thursday, 7th October, at County Hall, Glenfield
  • a Nappuccino event at Melton Country Park Visitor Centre, Wymondham Way, between 10am and 12pm

Both are informal get-togethers where parents, and parents to be, can speak to experts, watch demonstrations and pick up information about the County Councils 30 cashback scheme and the 'real nappy lending kit', which offers a two-week free trial.

There will also be information for existing real nappy users on how they can promote the campaign by becoming an advisor, as well as a number of stalls selling the latest products.

Katrina Thomas, a mum and real nappy convert from Wigston, said: We love everything about our real nappies - they are lovely and soft, they come in all sorts of types, colours, patterns and shapes.

"Most importantly though, we love them because they are easy. Many are as easy to put on as disposables and there is no longer any need to soak them. The whole process adds no more than 10 minutes to our day.

Tony Kershaw, County Council cabinet member for waste management, said: "Real nappies are eco-friendly and these events are a great way of reinforcing that today's product is very different from the terry towels of the past.

"If enough people in Leicestershire start using them, it would mean a cut in the amount of waste being sent to landfill and help to improve our environment.

Information will also be available from a stall in the food court at Fosse Park, between 8.30 and 5pm on Friday, 8th October.

The Melton 'Nappuccino' event is the first in a series and will be held on the first Saturday of each month.
