A man has today been sentenced to a total of 26-years imprisonment in connection with the deathof a Lithuanian national, who was found in Hungarton on Christmas Day 2008.

The body of 23-year-old Gediminas Kirstukas was found under a blanket by a dog walker in fields near to Quenby Hall, in Hungarton at around 10am.

After a trial at Leicester Crown Court Aurimas Zaremba (18/05/87), a Lithuanian national, was found guiltytoday of manslaughter and handed a sentence of 10 years. He was also found guilty of the theft of Mr Kirstukass car, for which he received a five year sentence. He received a total of six years after being found guilty of two counts of fraudulent use of bank cards.

He pleaded guilty to false imprisonment and received five years. All the sentences are to run concurrently.

Gintaris Kuzmarskis (20/10/90), who is also a Lithuanian national, was found guilty of false imprisonment and two counts of fraudulent use of bank cards. He received a sentence of three years for the false imprisonment and three years for each count of fraud. The sentences will run concurrently.

He was found not guilty of manslaughter and robbery.

During the trial the court heard how a post mortem examination found Mr Kirstukas had died from alcohol toxicity. The Home Office pathologist explained to the court that the deceased had consumed a considerable amount of alcohol which suppressed the functioning of his body, in particularly his breathing and circulation.

It also showed that at some point he had been tied at his wrists and ankles and the muscles at the back of his left upper arm were torn, indicating severe pulling on his arm while he was still alive.

The remains of a BZP tablet, a cattle wormer and acts as a stimulant, were found in his mouth, along with the remains of TFMPP, another stimulant.

The court heard how the 23-year-old victim was considering selling his Audi A6 car and defendant Zaremba wanted to buy it. On December 23 Zaremba and Kuzmarskis met the deceased in Boston, Lincolnshire where they took cash and bank cards, forcing him to hand over his PIN numbers.

The pair then drove across Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshirewithdrawing cash, before ending up in Leicestershire.

During police interview Zaremba admitted leaving the victim in a field while he was suffering from breathing difficulties.

Zaremba told the court he had paid 2,000 for the deceaseds Audi A6 car and, following an argument carried him into a field and left him there to teach him a lesson.

Detective Chief Inspector Drew Elliott, senior investigating officer in the case said: Although this was an extensive enquiry which took officers to Lithuania, Liverpool and Lincolnshire, it is the involvement of the communities of Leicestershire that have helped us to bring these offenders to justice.

It was thanks to a to a member of the public who took down the registration number of a suspicious vehicle seen in the Hungarton area which led us to Zaremba and Kuzmarskis and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the communities of Leicestershire for assisting us with this investigation.

I am pleased for the family that now the trial is over and verdicts and sentences have been given they can finally start rebuilding their lives and moving forward.
