The number of distraction burglary offences in Melton Mowbray has fallen by 78% and officers are hoping to avoid a seasonal increase in offences by reminding the elderly not to be tricked into letting people into their homes.

Crime analysis shows that distraction burglaries across the Force peak during October, November and December so officers in Melton Mowbray are hoping to prevent this predicted increase by reminding people not to let strangers into their homes.

In 2009 there were 18 distraction burglaries across Melton Mowbray there have only been 4 so far this year.

Inspector John Gray, Commander of Melton Mowbray local policing unit said; Thankfully we have seen a significant reduction in the number of distraction burglaries in Melton which is really good news but we are entering a three month period when we know this type of offence can increase. Wed like to remind residents not to let anyone into their homes even if the person on the doorstep claims to be from the water board or a utility company. We have one key message, if you are not sure, dont open the door.

Any genuine caller will not object if you ask them for identification and check their identity by speaking to a neighbour or calling the company they claim to be from. Distraction burglary is a despicable offence because it affects some of the most elderly and vulnerable people in society. I would urge everyone to put their chain on the door before opening it and dont be tricked into letting an unexpected doorstep caller into their home.

Other crime prevention advice includes;

  • Put the chain on before opening the door or talk to the caller through the door
  • Ask them to put their identification card through the letterbox
  • A genuine caller will not mind you checking their identification and most will be happy to make an appointment to return at a later date or time when you can have someone else with you.
  • Remember IDs may be false. You can ring the company they are claiming t be from and confirm their identity.
  • There is no such thing as the water board'
  • If you feel threatened dial 999 and ask for the police.

Anyone who sees any suspicious behaviour can call 999 or Leicester (0116) 222 2222.
