Throughout the summer holidays, thousands of children took part in the Summer Reading Challenge in Leicestershire libraries. Now, Leicestershire County Council is urging its young residents to come forward and vote for their favourite book.

The book with the most votes will be the winner of the Leicestershire Childrens Book Prize for 2010. The aim of the prize is to promote reading for pleasure and to widen reading choices for younger readers by increasing their awareness of recently published books written by real authors.

Suggestions from library staff and children that took part in the Summer Reading Challenge have been compiled into a shortlist of 10 titles being considered for the book prize. They will be promoted in schools and libraries between October and December and children can vote for their favourite, either online at: www.leics.gov.uk/childrensbookprize or in their local library. The nominations are:

  • The Pirates Treasure by Emily Bearn
  • Prison Break Spy Pups by Andy Cope
  • The Dunderheads by Paul Fleischman
  • Madame Pamplemousse and her incredible edibles by Rupert Kingfisher
  • Dirty Bertie Loo! by Alan MacDonald
  • Charlie and the haunted tent by Hilary McKay
  • Time train to the Blitz by Sophie McKenzie
  • Ghost Goblins by David Melling
  • The Story of Matthew Buzzington by Andy Stanton
  • Iggy and Me by Jenny Valentine

The winning author will be invited to a prize giving event in the New Year. The schools that generate the most votes will go into a prize draw and the winning school will receive 200 worth of new books and will have the opportunity to host the prize giving event.

Other local authors will be supporting the award by attending events at libraries throughout the County. They will talk about their own writing for younger readers and will also champion one of the titles on the list by telling the children why they like it and why they think it should win. For more information about these events please contact your local library or visit the website: www.leics.gov.uk/childrensbookprize

David Sprason, Leicestershire County Councils Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities, said:

The Summer Reading Challenge was a huge success in the Countys libraries and the scheme kept our children reading in the holiday period. The book prize is another great opportunity for children to explore a wide range of books and say which they like the best. Libraries in Leicestershire have lots of books for younger readers to enjoy, many of which are from top childrens authors. I would encourage everyone to get voting and most important of all, to continue reading.
