Snibston Discovery Museum is hosting one of the most prestigious annual exhibitions in the country. The Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition, on tour from the Natural History Museum, is now open in Coalville until the end of October.

The 72 images are displayed in the free-to-view Community Gallery and the stunning photography, originating from across the globe, encompasses a vast range of photographs featuring animals, plants and landscapes.

The exhibition is the result of The Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition 2009 for which there were over 40,000 entries from 94 countries. Jointly owned by the Natural History Museum and the BBC Wildlife Magazine, the exhibition is touring the UK and will stay at Snibston until 31st October.

Included in the winners gallery is a submission from Loughborough photographer, Danny Green who won the Black and White Category for his image Starling Wave.

David Sprason, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities, said:

"I am thrilled to see Snibston hosting this well-celebrated exhibition and making it available to the people of Leicestershire. Its very important that such exhibitions are not only for cities like London. Snibston has made it possible for us to see these stunning images, and for free.

"I am particularly delighted that a Leicestershire citizen is one of the winners too. It just goes to show what talent we have right here on our doorsteps."

To celebrate the start of the exhibition, local wildlife expert, Colin Green will be giving a talk on creating an eco-garden this coming Tuesday (28th) at 2pm. Again the talk is free to those wanting to attend.

A further series of Meet the Expert sessions in-keeping with the theme of Wildlife, including one for children during half term, will run throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Colin Green said:

"As a young lad, I used to spend many hours wandering around the fields and woods watching and studying the marvellous wildlife; unfortunately I didn't have the photographic technology that is available today to capture the amazing sights I saw.

"I really welcome exhibitions like the Wildlife Photographer of the Year as it gives people a chance to glimpse the wonder and beauty of our natural world. It's wonderful that this free exhibition has come to Leicestershire and is available to see at Snibston - I urge everyone to go and attend the fascinating programme of talks and events associated with it."

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition runs from Saturday 25th September until Sunday 31st October. Colin Greens talk is free to attend at 2pm on Tuesday 28th September. For details of other Meet the Expert events please call: 01530 278444 or visit: www.snibston.com

An image is available on request of the photograph taken by Danny Green who won the Black and White Category for his image Starling Wave. Please call: 01530 3053443.
