The historical battlefield where King Richard III fought his last battle and a former colliery turned tourist attraction both scooped top regional awards at a ceremony last night.
The Leicestershire County Council attractions came tops at the Renaissance East Midlands Regional Heritage Awards held last night at Kelham Hall in Newark.
Bosworth Battlefield won the Best Visitor Experience 2010, while Snibston Discovery Museum was joint winner for Work with Children and Young People 2010. Harborough Museum was highly commended for the Best Exhibition category.
Bosworth Battlefield attracts visitors from around the globe looking to re-live the deadly battle of 1485 in the interactive exhibition, where visitors can try on armour, fire a longbow and see rare finds discovered as part of the groundbreaking archaeological survey, which made headlines around the globe.
Snibston attracts around 100,000 visitors each year and hosts a range of events. Snibston was recognised at the awards for its fantastic after school club for young people with Autism. The club helps to encourage young people to develop and shape their creativity and imagination.
Harborough Museum features one of the most significant Iron Age finds in Britain including over 5,000 gold and silver coins and a Roman Helmet all excavated from a late Iron Age/early Roman Shrine in Leicestershire.
David Sprason, Leicestershire County Councils Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities, attended the ceremony and picked up the awards. He said:
"This is a tremendous achievement for Leicestershire. The County Councils Museums won the most awards last night and this just goes to show the wealth of excellent tourist attractions we have in the County. Congratulations must go to all the staff at these venues who work tirelessly to ensure that people have a truly remarkable experience when they visit."
