Inspirational young volunteer urges more nominations for young people’s award!
Posted on 16/09/10
Chief Executive's
A young teenager who turned his life around after spending time in prison and who went on to win a prestigious award for helping other young people, is urging members of the public to put forward nominations for the Lord Lieutenants Award for Young People.
19 year old Ben Clarke from New Parks in Leicester won the Award earlier this year. Two years ago Ben was in a young offenders institute and now he helps other young people stay on the straight and narrow at Soft Touch Arts - a community art programme that helps young people. He also creates his own music and art work.
The Lord Lieutenants Awards are open to young people aged 13-19 years. They are the first of their kind to be initiated by a Lord Lieutenant. Lady Gretton wanted to identify and reward the best examples of achievement amongst our young people. This is the fifth year the awards have been running.
The awards are divided into five categories each with three short-listed candidates, with one winner for each section and one overall winner. Each category winner is awarded a prize worth 500 with prizes also given to the runners-up.
Lady Gretton established the award to raise the profile of young peoples achievements. In partnership with organisations offering services to young people and with the business community, the awards seek to identify and reward the very best examples of achievement by young people in Leicester and Leicestershire.
The Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Lady Gretton said:
Young people are key members of society and it is important that their positive role within our community is recognised and celebrated. There are many good examples of what young people have achieved, sometimes despite great disadvantage and obstacles placed before them. I would urge people to nominate people they know and who they think should be recognised by these awards.
Ben Clarke, winner of the award for 2010, said:
I was amazed I won the Award for 2010 because there were so many great young people nominated. Its crazy to imagine what you can achieve through self belief and rehabilitation, and to get recognised as the Lord-Lieutenants Young Person of the Year is fantastic!
Eligibility criteria for the award
The award is open to young people aged 13-19 living in Leicester or Leicestershire. The young person can be nominated by other young people, their school, parent/carer or any other agency.
The award recognises and rewards young people who have demonstrated exceptional volunteering, leadership, commitment or determination in five specific categories:
- Bravery - Overcoming personal barriers to achieve success, making a stand against bullying, racism etc, or a life-saving act of bravery.
- Kindness in helping others - Supporting an elderly neighbour or relative, fundraising, etc.
- Improving the community - Commitment to improving their school, community or local environment.
- A voice for young people - Contribution to promoting the views of children and young people in decision making.
- Creativity and innovation - Demonstrating fresh thinking and new ideas in the arts, music, engineering or computing.
There will be a separate award for each category. From the winners of these categories one person will be announced as Lord-Lieutenants Young Person of the Year.
The closing date for nominations is 31st January 2011.
