Three convicted men ordered to pay back their proceeds of crime
Three men have been ordered to pay305,871.77 under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).
In 2008/2009 Mohinder Singh Rai, Baljinder Singh Rai and Anjum Nazir pleaded guilty to fraudulent evasion of restriction to import class C drugs.
All three men were sentenced to eight years imprisonment.
Now, following POCA confiscation proceedings at Portsmouth Crown Court Baljinder Singh Rai has been ordered to pay 11,000.00.
At a hearing in July Mohinder Singh Rai was ordered to pay 280,171 andAnjum Nazir ordered to pay 14,700.
Detectives from Leicestershire Constabularys Special Operations Unit began investigating the trio at the beginning of 2008.
They established that their involvement in the drugs trade stretched far wider than Leicestershire and local police joined forces with the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) and H.M Revenue & Customs.
Investigations established that the three Leicester men were assisting an Israeli organised crime group who were making arrangements in the UK to find a place to berth a tug boat under the ruse of setting up a tug business in Southampton.
In April 2008 a 70ft tug boat docked in Southampton. The boat was searched and found to contain 12.5 tonnes of cannabis with a street value of approximately 36 million. These drugs were intended for distribution within the UK.
Mick Penfold, from Leicestershire Constabularys Economic Crime Unit said: Not only has a large quantity of drugs been prevented from being distributed onto the streets of the UK, but the proceeds of these three individuals criminal lifestyle has been confiscated to ensure that they are unable to enjoy the profit from their criminality when they are released from prison
The Proceeds of Crime Act allows police officers to confiscate assets if they believe they have been obtained through crime.
Assets can be confiscated following conviction or through civil proceedings should a criminal conviction not take place.
