Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and Country Park has won a prestigious national award, known as the Oscars of the Museums World.
Now in its seventh year, The Museums and Heritage Awards for Excellence recognise and celebrate best practice within museums, galleries and heritage visitor attractions across the UK.
Bosworth Battlefield, run by Leicestershire County Council, won the Classic Award, which is open to any museum, gallery or heritage attraction that has been established for 10 years or more. The winners were announced by broadcaster and journalist, Simon Calder, at a ceremony at London’s Church House, Westminster on Wednesday 13th May.
Bosworth beat a shortlist of six national museums, galleries and heritage attractions, including the National History Museum, National Museums Liverpool and the Cabinet War Rooms.
The Awards were judged by a panel of industry professionals, including: Bernard Donoghue, Head of Government and Public Affairs at VisitBritain; Diane Lees, Director of V&A Museum of Childhood; Matthew Tanner MBE, Director of ssGreat Britain; Marie Roberts, Editor of the Museums and Heritage Magazine and Sam Mullins, Director of London Transport Museum.
Judges were looking especially for evidence of continued growth, development and visitor interest over the long term, with emphasis being placed on the ongoing relevance and vibrancy of the museum.
Helen Emery, Project Director of Bosworth Battlefield, said: “We are delighted to receive this award and it is a credit to all the people who have been involved with the Heritage Centre since it was established in 1974. For the last 35 years, Leicestershire County Council have been the guardians of this story providing not just the facts in an honest and accessible manner, but also the fun, drama, excitement and vibrancy that really brings this pivotal moment in history to life.“
Martin Peters, Chief Executive of Leicester Shire Promotions, the organisation responsible for promoting the city and county to visitors, commented: “To be recognised as a premier UK heritage attraction is a tremendous achievement for Bosworth Battlefield. The new interactive exhibition at the Battlefield has further strengthened the offer for visitors and this award celebrates a commitment to long-term development.”
Anna Preedy, Director of the Museums & Heritage Show and founder of the Museums & Heritage Awards for Excellence said: “Despite challenging economic times, the creativity and determination of this sector has never been more evident and it was a great privilege to be able to celebrate the impressive achievements of so many. The event really is one to remember – the diversity of the projects submitted was truly remarkable and it is enormously uplifting to see what a difference so many of them have made in encouraging new audiences to our museums, galleries and heritage visitor attractions and often working within extremely tight budgetary constraints.”

Notes to Editors
Background: Bosworth Battlefield is run by Leicestershire County Council and is the location of the Battle of Bosworth. The battle, which took place on 22 August 1485, brought an end to 30 years of English civil war, now known as the War of the Roses and saw the infamous King Richard III lose both his life and crown to Henry Tudor. The Battlefield includes an award-winning exhibition telling the story of the Battle and looking at its impact on British history, which has been funded by an award from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
