Highways, Transportation & Waste Management
A ground-breaking ceremony has taken place to officially start work on an innovative waste treatment site at Cotesbach in Leicestershire.
County Council leader David Parsons dug the first soil at the site of Lafarge Aggregates’ new sustainable waste facility, which is due to open in spring 2010.
David Parsons said: “I’m pleased to start work on this scheme, which will divert rubbish from landfill, cut our landfill tax bills and reduce the impact of Leicestershire’s waste on the environment.”
Lafarge, partnering with New Earth Solutions, is building the mechanical biological treatment facility at its existing landfill site.
Andrew Bate from Lafarge said: “This is an exciting day, marking the first stage of the development of our new mechanical biological treatment plant. We are delighted to be working with Leicestershire County Council to help them reduce the amount of waste going into landfill.”
The Cotesbach facility will use proven technology that is operating successfully in Dorset and Kent. Each year it will process a minimum of 40,000 tonnes of rubbish, collected by district councils, which cannot be separated for recycling by householders.
The waste will be mechanically sorted to remove recyclable material and the remainder will be composted in an enclosed environment - well-screened from neighbours and with special filters to eliminate odours. The composted end product will be able to be used to restore the landfill site.
