Monitors will be out and about checking school bus passes over the next few months.

To make sure that County Council money is used effectively, officers will be ensuring that people have paid for the transport they are using.

The authority spends around 8million on providing home to school transport to around 17,000 pupils every day and for 6,000 of these, there is a charge.

Unfortunately, some people don't pay or cancel payments meaning that a total of 16,000 is owed.

A hardship fund is in place for those paying for denominational transport - this has been doubled and another 10,000 added to bring it up to 50,000 from April. Post-16 pupils can also apply for educational maintenance allowance to help with transport costs to college.

Over the next six months, the County Council is doubling the amount of CCTV on school buses from 20 to 40 and strengthening a team of inspectors to monitor and improve behaviour.

Most young people who travel on school buses are well behaved but the initiative is designed to cut out instances of poor and dangerous behaviour which can disrupt the journey for others.

Nicholas Rushton, County Council Deputy Leader, said: "It's really important that those legitimately paying for and using our services aren't made to subsidise those who aren't.

"The majority of young people who travel on our buses are well behaved but we want to make sure that all pupils enjoy a peaceful journey by tackling disruptive behaviour when it occurs."
