An event next week will give prospective students, parents and local residents their first look at exciting plans for a brand new £13 million Post-16 Centre for Melton Mowbray.
Plans for the state-of-the-art building include:
•Four ‘learning zones’ dedicated to different areas of study. They are: Communications, which includes English and foreign languages, Discovery, which includes science and maths, World, which includes geography and history and Creativity, which includes art and design
•An exciting two-floor Learning Resource Centre, with full library facilities, including ICT and areas for independent study and group working
•A large flexible learning area extending over two floors to provide space for group and independent working and wireless internet access
•Modern science laboratories, including a sports science lab
•Classrooms with moveable walls to help with teaching larger or smaller groups
•A new dance and drama studio which can be opened out into the adjacent area to create a large performance space with tiered seating.
The building is also planned to incorporate the latest environmentally friendly and energy-saving ideas. For example, high levels of insulation will be used to make the building heat-efficient, it has been designed to maximise natural light and ventilation and there will be a wind turbine on site to generate electricity.
The new centre will be built as part of the Melton and Vale of Belvoir schools’ reorganisation and situated on the King Edward VII School campus. Students will study at the Post-16 Centre after studying at one of the four partner secondary schools in the area from age 11 to16.
The centre will provide an excellent range of academic and vocational courses, including new diplomas, and will be focussed purely on the needs of Post 16 students, enhancing the learning experience for them.
It will have a dedicated core of teachers with a wealth of experience at Key Stage 5, supported by professionals from other partner schools and Brooksby Melton College. Staff and students will work closely together, sharing social areas such as a café and work spaces – this will help them to share ideas and create a culture of collaborative learning.
Plans can be viewed at the event, held in the Harris Building, King Edward VII School. This can be attended anytime between 4pm and 7pm on March 30th and there will be a chance to talk to planning consultants and architects.
It will give people the chance to look at the plans for the Post-16 Centre and give their views. They will also be able to have their say on a revised masterplan for the whole of the King Edward VII campus, which now includes proposals for a new Brooksby Melton College building to replace that in the centre of the town.
Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet Lead Member for the Children and Young People’s Service, said: “The new Post-16 Centre is a very exciting development for education in Melton Mowbray and the Vale of Belvoir. It will provide excellent facilities and a first-class standard of education for Post 16 students.”
For people unable to go along, plans for the Post-16 Centre and the revised masterplan can be seen at: www.leics.gov.uk/meltonvob following the event.
A planning application for the new Post-16 Centre is due to be submitted in April and it is planned to open in 2011.
