Brand new canopies are helping Leicestershire residents to recycle whatever the weather.
Weather-proof recycling areas have been introduced at four recycling and household waste sites to provide people with sheltered, dry areas in which to recycle their waste.
As well as making it easier and more convenient, the canopies are designed to further boost recycling rates in Leicestershire and cut the amount of waste sent to landfill. Recycling rates at local sites have rocketed over the last two years to the current rate of 69%.
The County Council has installed the canopies at four of its 14 sites - Market Harborough, Barwell, Loughborough and Oadby - and plans to roll them out to other sites over the next 12 to 18 months.
New road markings and signs have also been added to several facilities to improve access and make it easier for people to move around and find the relevant containers.
Nicholas Rushton, County Council Deputy Leader and Chairman of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: "Thanks to the hard work of Leicestershire residents, our recycling rates are one of the highest in the country. We're working very hard to continue this trend by making recycling facilities as easy and convenient to use as possible."
Photo Opportunity:
Nicholas Rushton, County Council Deputy Leader and Chairman of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership will be visiting Barwell recycling and household waste site on Tuesday 24th March at 11am. During his visit he will meet three site inspectors responsible for overseeing the improvements to these facilities.
