10 March 2009 Flashing signs signal good news for Sharnford - photo opportunity -

Innovative white lines and flashing road signs are being used to improve life for residents of a Leicestershire village.

To reduce the impact of traffic in Sharnford, the County Council has put in new vehicle-activated signs along Leicester Road. These light up to warn drivers they are travelling too fast and of mobile speed cameras.

New white lines will also be created on Leicester Road near the post office over the next month. This narrow section of road has caused concern as lorries try and pass each other, often leaving little room for pedestrians.

The lines will be moved further away from the edge of the kerb and the centre line removed. This will protect pedestrians and encourage large vehicles to drive at slower and safer speeds.

‘Sharks teeth’ road markings will also be put in and ‘SLOW’ painted on the road to highlight that drivers are entering the village.

County Council Leader David Parsons will visit Sharnford tomorrow (Wednesday) to have a look at the new signs in action.

The scheme is costing around £25,000. Around 8,500 vehicles a day pass through Sharnford, including 2,200 lorries.

Mr Parsons said: “Reducing the impact of vehicles in Sharnford is very important for the local community and environment and we've worked closely with the Parish Council and Sharnford Traffic Action Group to bring about these improvements.

"The new road signs use the latest technology and are proving to be successful in reducing speeds - there are over 200 of them across Leicestershire."

Photo Opportunity:

Mr Parsons will visit Sharnford at 10am on Wednesday (11th March), where he will meet members of Sharnford Traffic Action Group (STAG) and the Parish Council, view one of the new signs and see locations for the signing and lining work. Photo opportunity will be at the new sign on Leicester Rd close to Sharnbrook Gardens. Nearest postcode is LE10 3PP.
