Incident of concern in Ansty

Police from Anstey are appealing for witnesses following an incident of concern.

The incident happened at around 8.25am on Tuesday March 3, as a 14-year-old girl was walking along Edward Street.

A white escort-style van pulled up alongside her and the passenger in the van spoke to the girl. Remembering her Stranger Danger messages, the girl didn't stop and continued on her journey.

She walked along James Street where she noticed the vehicle again. This time the passenger got out of the vehicle and began to walk in her direction. The girl ran off up the street to a friend's house and the van drove off towards Link Road.

The passenger is described as being white, around 5'8" tall, in his late thirties to early forties and was bald. He was said to be of a large build and was wearing a dark coloured polo shirt with light denim jeans. He also had a local accent.

The driver of the van is said to be white with short, dark brown hair.

Detective Constable Kim Potter, the officer investigating the incident, said: "Thankfully the girl was left uninjured but she has been left scared and upset by what has happened. She did the right thing by running to the nearest trusted adult and reporting the incident to us.

"We are keen to talk to the owner of a blue car that was seen driving along Charnwood Road at the time of the incident. We believe that the driver of this car may recall details about this incident and so would encourage them to contact us.

"It is not clear what the intentions of the pair in the van were at this time. They could have been completely innocent. If you were the men in the van that morning then we'd urge you to contact us.

It happened at a time in the morning when there will have been a lot of people on the school run or daily commute. If you do use this route, think back. Did you see a vehicle matching this description driving suspiciously? Did you see the two men in the area? Do you know them? If so then please contact us with any information you have."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact DC 4269 Kim Potter or DS 307 Pete Wheeler on 0116 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 4269 or 0307 respectively. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
