Plans to boost safety on a section of the A47 in Hinckley have been unveiled and residents are being invited to have their say.
The £250,000 improvements aim to reduce casualties on a section of the northern perimeter road between Earl Shilton and the A5 (Watling Street) and follow an accident study in the area.
The County Council plans include a right-turn ban for vehicles joining Normandy Way from Cloverfield (at Morrisons) and new traffic signals at the Cornfield junction (at McDonalds).
A speed limit reduction, anti-skid surfacing and improved road markings and signs are also part of the measures.
Work at Cloverfield junction follows a trial scheme last summer and is due to start at the end of March. This will last for around two weeks - during this period, the junction will be closed and traffic will be directed to use the adjacent Cornfield junction.
Residents can comment on the plans through the County Councils' website and have until 18th March to do so.
Nicholas Rushton, Deputy County Council Leader, said, “These improvements are a great boost to drivers using this stretch of the A47.
"Our study showed that there were different types of accidents which meant we need to look at the road as a whole and introduce various measures to improve safety overall."
The remainder of the improvements will be completed later this year, once the results of the public consultation have been assessed.
Over the last three years there have been 32 reported accidents on this road which have resulted in 51 people being injured.
Comment on the plans via www.leics.gov.uk/hnpr or discuss the proposals further by calling Ben Crossley on 0116 305 7216.
Notes:
The full range of improvements are:
•Speed limit reduction from 40mph to 30mph on Dodwells Road, from the A5 to the Ashby Canal bridge.
•Right turn ban for vehicles joining Normandy Way from Cloverfield (Morrisons).
•Traffic signal controlled junction at Cornfield (McDonalds).
•Anti-skid surfacing at the Wykin Road, Cloverfield and Cornfield junctions.
•Circulatory road markings on the Wykin Road, Stoke Road and Leicester Road roundabouts
•Centre hatching between A447 Ashby Road and Leicester Road
•More conspicuous road signs for traffic approaching the 40mph speed limit near Cornwall Way
•General improvement of road markings and signs
