Man sentenced for shooting in South Knighton

Peter Ogwuru
A man has today (Wednesday, February 25) been given an indeterminate sentence of detention for public protection, with a minimum of four years before he is eligible for parole, after discharging a firearm in South Knighton.
Peter Ogwuru (27) of Castle Point, Hinckley, pleaded guilty to Possession of a Firearm with intent to endanger life at an earlier hearing at Leicester Crown Court on December 8 last year.
The public protection sentence means that after four years a parole board will make a decision as to whether Ogwuru should be released or whether he is still a threat to the public. If they determine he is not eligible for release then they will set another term and the process will be repeated.
The charge relates to an incident at 9.30pm on May 14, 2008 on Shanklin Drive in Leicester when Ogwuru, driving a black Audi A3, fired four shots into the street from a Smith and Wesson revolver.
An intensive police investigation was launched and Ogwuru was arrested less than seven hours later from his home address. He was remanded into custody and charged two days later. The revolver was also recovered at a different address.
Throughout the investigative process Ogwuru refused to comment but provided a written statement to say that he did not shoot the gun.
However, in the end the evidence against him was so strong that Ogwuru had no choice but to plead guilty.
This, according to lead investigator Detective Inspector Andy Allden, is largely due to the assistance of the local community.
"There's no doubt that the information we were being given by the residents in and around Shanklin Drive and Carisbrooke Road was a big factor in us being able to arrest Ogwuru so quickly," said DI Allden.
"Ogwuru has not walked the streets of Leicester since his arrest and I'm certain he won't do again for a considerable length of time. He was arrested within hours of the offence, charged within days and when he saw the weight of evidence against him had no choice but to plead guilty.
"The fact the judge has given him an Indeterminate sentence for Public Protection sends a very strong message as he'll remain in prison for as long as the parole board feel he is a threat to the public.
"We have to thank the local community for coming forward with information about the incident and for being patient with us while we closed the road to investigate the scene. We hope they can take some pride and also some reassurance from today's result.
"Gun crime is still very rare in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland due largely to the fact that we refuse to compromise in our efforts to find the offenders.
"Ogwuru wanted to be a big player in the local crime scene and his name will be known among other criminality. We hope that today's result also demonstrates to them the lengths we and the local community will go to bring them to justice and the kinds of prison sentences they can expect when we do."
