23 February 2009 School children tell Chairman how to stay safe!

Photo opportunity: Local school children will be telling Tony Kershaw, the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, how to keep safe, when he visits Warning Zone - a project set up to teach youngsters about safety issues.  Mr Kershaw will be at the project, which is based at the Halfcroft Industrial Estate on High Street in Syston, on Tuesday morning, the 24th February (photo opportunity at 11.30 am).

Children from St. Bartholomews Church of England School, Quorn,  will be in Syston to find out more about the project, which aims to help children stay safe in their everyday lives and understand about personal responsibility.

Warning Zone deals with issues such as the consequences of becoming involved in offending or anti-social behaviour and everyday dangers such as playing on railway tracks and building sites.

The project opened in October 2006 and since then, some 10,300 children from schools in Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland have been taught how to be safe.

The project is run by the High Sheriffs' charity Leicestershire & Rutland Crimebeat and is supported by the County Council and its partners.

Tony Kershaw, Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, said:

“Warning Zone is a great facility for schools and the volunteer guides do a fantastic job.  The project has been hugely successful and delivers an important message to our children to stay safe, ensure the safety of others and to stay out of trouble."
