20 February 2009 Speed safety signs for Skeffington

Skeffington will receive new speed-reducing signs along a stretch of the A47 next month.

The new, illuminating signs being installed by Leicestershire County Council will replace the current, old-style ‘matrix’ signs.

Vehicles travelling above the set limit will trigger the signs to light up, reminding drivers of the 50mph speed limit.

Costing around £35,000, they will also warn drivers about local traffic joining the A47 from Skeffington by flashing a ‘junction ahead’ sign.

Nicholas Rushton, Deputy Council Leader, said: “This is a modern type of vehicle-activated sign based on our award-winning scheme in place at East Midlands Airport.

“We are keen to use innovative techology to reduce casualties on our roads and this is still a relatively new approach to encouraging drivers to slow down."

The new signs will take about a week to install, during which time temporary traffic signals will be used during off-peak periods. Work is expected to start on 2nd March.

Notes:

The CATS (Cycle Activated Traffic Signs) scheme in place at East Midlands Airport won ICE EMMA Small Project of the Year in 2006.
