Photo Opportunity: A special turf cutting ceremony is taking place next week to mark the start of building work on the new £5 million extension to Long Field School in Melton Mowbray. Staff, pupils and governors will be joined at the school by the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, Tony Kershaw, to celebrate this major milestone at 1.45 pm on Thursday 26th February 2009.
The new development will include:
- A brand new state-of-the-art sports hall with changing rooms and a viewing area. These willl be used to deliver BTEC and GCSE PE.

- A new extension dedicated to design and technology, including a special IT hub for pupils to develop their design skills.
- An inclusion area for pupils that need extra support, including dedicated space for teaching small groups.
- An extension to the school's dining room including a cyber-café area.
- A new area for staff development and training.
Long Field is one of the partner schools in the £45 million re-organisation of education in Melton Mowbray and the Vale of Belvoir. This aims to raise standards of education and achievement, building on current school excellence.
As part of the reorganisation, Long Field will retain pupils until they finish their GCSEs and be a partner in the new Post-16 Centre to be built on the King Edward VII campus.
Work on the school should be completed by April 2010.
Tony Kershaw, Chairman of the County Council, said:
"This is a major milestone for the school and the start of work brings the excitement of the whole project just that one step closer. I know that everyone is eagerly awaiting for the new school to be completed.
“The County Council, is committed to providing education of a high standard and the building and refurbishment of schools around Leicestershire is changing education and bringing it right into the 21st Century."
Rob Garrett, Headteacher at Long Field School, said:
"The start of this building programme represents a new era in our schools history. It has been a privilege to be able to contribute to the development of a building fit for learning in the 21st Century. Our school will allow students to develop their own skills in a way and pace that suits them best, supported by first class teachers and resources. When complete, it will form an emotionally secure base for our younger and most vulnerable students, a community base and excellent sports facilities."
