Bosworth Battlefield Guides will be taking visitors on a walk through history on weekly guided tours of the historic battlefield trail and country park.
Hear the story of the Battle of Bosworth field, which saw the death of King Richard III and the birth of the powerful Tudor dynasty. Follow in the footsteps of your guide to the top of Ambion Hill and through the picturesque Ambion Woods then past King Richard’s Well, where he is reported to have quenched his thirst before the battle. Then listen to the drama unfold as you stroll along the beautiful tree-lined dis-used railway track that leads down to the Ashby Canal and then back up to the Heritage Centre.
At the end of the tour there’s the chance to ask your knowledgeable and experienced guide any questions you may have on the battle. There’s also the chance to see the latest exhibits at Bosworth; a stone coffin unearthed in Earl Shilton and a free exhibition on the Yeoman of the Guard.
Afterwards, why not explore this battle’s fascinating history further in the award-winning interactive exhibition or relax in the atmospheric surroundings of the medieval Tithe Barn Restaurant, which serves a carvery Sunday lunch from 12.00 - 2.00pm for £7.95, and refreshments throughout the day.
The one and a half hour walk leaves every Sunday at 11.00am from 1 March to 5 October from the Battlefield Heritage Centre, with an additional walk at 2.00pm on some event weekends, for details see www.bosworthbattlefield.com. Prices are Adults £3, Child/Concession £2, under 3's free, Family (2 adults+ 3 children) £10, (2 adults + 2 children ) £8, (1 adult + 3 children) £7, (1 adult + 2 children) £5.
New for 2009 are Guided Evening Walks, which offer a rare chance to experience the beauty of Bosworth Battlefield in the early evening during the summer months and to experience the battlefield by torchlight during Autumn.
Dates for evening walks include Monday 6 July to celebrate the date Richard III was crowned, Friday 2 October to celebrate Richard III’s birthday, Friday 30 October to celebrate Henry VII’s crowning and Thursday 5 November to celebrate Bonfire Night. All walks leave at 7.00pm and arrive back at the Heritage Centre at 8.30pm and cost £3 for adults and £2 children.
Background: Bosworth Battlefield is run by Leicestershire County Council and is the location of the Battle of Bosworth. The battle, which took place on 22 August 1485, brought an end to 30 years of English civil war, now known as the War of the Roses and saw the infamous King Richard III lose both his life and crown to Henry Tudor. The Battlefield includes a new exhibition telling the story of the Battle and looking at its impact on British history, which has been funded by an award from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Admission to the exhibition costs £6.00 for adults, £4 Concessions and £3 for children. Family ticket £15 (2 Adults + 2 children) or £10 (1 adult + 2 children)
