Suspicious incident in Syston

Police from Syston are appealing for witnesses following a report of a suspicious incident.

The incident happened at around 1.40pm yesterday (Monday February 2, 2009) as a 10-year-old girl was playing on the grassed area to the entrance to Nelson Street.

A white van pulled up beside her and the driver asked to her if she wanted to get into the van as he had some sweets. The girl refused and ran home and the van reversed up the street towards Wellington Street.

The man is described as white, around 30-years-old, with broad shoulders and had straight dark hair which was ear length. He was wearing a light grey t-shirt.

The van was medium sized and had a dent just above the back wheel.

PC Ed Stephenson, who is investigating the incident, said: "Thankfully the girl was not injured but has been left very upset by what happened.

"We are keen to establish who this man is and why he approached the girl in the first place and would like to hear from anybody who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time.

"Did you witness this incident? Did you see a white van with a man matching this description in the area before or after the incident? If so, or if you have any other information, then please contact us urgently."

Anybody with any information is asked to contact PC 2029 Ed Stephenson on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 2029. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
