Leicestershire Councty Council Adult Social Care Service

27 January 2009 New service supports carers in an emergency ** photo opportunity, Friday, January 30**

Leicestershire County Council is launching a unique service to support carers in an emergency situation.

This scheme is the first of its kind in the county and has been developed to meet the needs of carers as highlighted in the recent Carers’ Strategy.

It means that if someone should happen to be a carer, or they have an emergency, the person they care for will still have received help and support in the carer’s absence.

The service will be provided free of charge to carers and the person they look after and is being provided by the County Council’s Adult Social Care Service in partnership with Claimar Care Ltd.

Eligible carers will receive support with planning for emergencies as well as a credit card-sized Carer’s Emergency Response Card to carry with them.

In an emergency, carers call the number on the card and Claimar Care Ltd will organise support according to the individual’s emergency plan, or provide direct support for them until alternative arrangements can be made.

David Sprason, Cabinet member for Adult Social Care said: “The introduction of this scheme is essential to the carers of Leicestershire who provide care and support for people across the county. It aims to remove some of the anxieties faced by carers every day and offer them peace of mind, particularly when facing an emergency such as an unexpected illness.

“This scheme demonstrates how working in partnership with other organisations across the county can produce a quality and effective service.”

Richard Stevens, Claimar Care’s Impact Manager for the region said: “Each week across the UK our teams of trained and qualified staff make around 80,000 visits to people in their homes, providing personal care enabling them to enjoy all the benefits and comfort of being in their own environment.

“We are delighted to be part of the scheme that Leicestershire has initiated. It will provide people with practical support, plus the reassurance that the person receiving their care will continue to be properly cared for if they can’t do it themselves.

“The key to this scheme is to get people on board before an emergency occurs. It’s important for people to spread the word to their friends and families, encouraging anyone who would benefit from the it to sign up for this excellent free service.”
