A medieval stone coffin, rumoured to be that of King Richard III, will be on display at Bosworth Battlefield when it re-opens for the season on Sunday 1 February.
Found by local resident Reg Colver in a garden in Earl Shilton, the coffin was unearthed with the help of historian Dan Snow and filmed by The One Show in November.
The coffin has kindly been donated to Bosworth Battlefield by David Wilson Homes East Midlands, and will be on display in the Heritage Centre courtyard for visitors to view.
The origin of the coffin is not known, however stone coffins would have been expensive to manufacture so it is likely the person who was once buried in this coffin is one of high social standing.
Tony Kershaw, Chairman of the County Council, said: “This is a tremendous find and where better to place it other than Bosworth Battlefield which is steeped in so much history. Everyone should come along and take a look at the coffin and all the other exhibits at the Battlefield which date back to the time of King Richard III. I would like to thank David Wilson Homes for donating the find to the Battlefield.”
Philip Lacey, Sales Director for David Wilson, says: “This has been a very exciting project for us and we are delighted to have been able to share it with The Battle of Bosworth Heritage Centre, preserving this piece of history for generations to come.”
The dramatic events of the Battle of Bosworth,1485, can be experienced in a new, interactive exhibition at the Battlefield Heritage Centre, which recently won the bronze award for Small Visitor Attraction at the East Midlands Tourism Enjoy England Awards.
New for the 2009 season is a free temporary exhibition titled The Royal Bodyguards: The Making of the Yeoman of the Guard and an exciting new interactive skeleton exhibit in the Bosworth Field Investigations Research Laboratory.

1.15pm Preview of new exhibition
Media are invited to a preview tour of the new battlefield attractions for 2009, including a FREE temporary exhibition titled The Royal Bodyguards: The Making of the Yeoman of the Guard and an exciting new interactive skeleton exhibit in the Bosworth Field Investigations Research Laboratory.
Background: Bosworth Battlefield is run by Leicestershire County Council and is the location of the Battle of Bosworth. The battle, which took place on 22 August 1485, brought an end to 30 years of English civil war, now known as the War of the Roses and saw the infamous King Richard III lose both his life and crown to Henry Tudor. The Battlefield includes a new exhibition telling the story of the Battle and looking at its impact on British history, which has been funded by an award from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Admission to the exhibition usually costs £6.00 for adults, £4 Concessions and £3 for children. Family ticket £15 (2 Adults + 2 children) or £10 (1 adult + 2 children)
