Hinckley campaign drives down violent crime
Hinckley and Bosworth Community Safety Partnership's Safer Christmas Campaign has helped achieve the lowest levels of violent crime recorded in Hinckley town centre for six years.
Over the period of the Partnership's Christmas Campaign all assault was down by 45 per cent compared to the same period last year. There were only seven incidents of assault recorded between December 1, 2008 and January 2, 2009, compared to twelve incidents over the same period the previous year.
This reduction is on top of the decrease in violent crime that we achieved during the Safer Christmas Campaign in 2007 that saw a reduction of nearly 18% compared to the 2006 festive season.
These results encompass common assault, actual bodily harm and grievous bodilly harm. Assaults that involved actual bodily harm saw the most significant fall from 10 incidents last year to just five reported incidents over the Christmas period this year - a fifty percent reduction.
Insp Martyn Ball, commander of Hinckley LPU, said: "Our campaign has made members of the public aware that the police will not tolerate this sort of crime and every measure has been put in place to combat it.
"A lot of extremely hard work by the Community Safety Partnership and the Police has gone into tackling alcohol related violent crime over the Christmas period and we are delighted with the reductions that have been achieved.
"We are not complacent, however, and are determined to continue drive the number of such offences down further over the year building on the successes we have had."
A number of drug enforcements were carried out in the run-up to Christmas which led to over 20 people being arrested for drug related offenses. Large amounts of Class A,B and C drugs were also seized in these raids which officers believe seriously disrupted their sale.
Insp Ball continued: "We are working in partnership with Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council to drive down drink and drug fuelled violent crime. These figures show we have gone a long way to making Hinckley town centre a safer place to live, work and enjoy yourself, free from the fear of crime."
Apart from this campaign, the Partnership implemented other initiatives aimed at reducing alcohol related violent crime and disorder all aimed at making people aware of the negative impact of alcohol abuse and towards making Hinckley Town Centre a safer and welcoming place to enjoy by all over the festive period. These included Street Pastors, Taxis Marshalls and Blue Tooth Alcohol Awareness messaging.
Ron Grantham the Hincley and Bosworth Borough Council's Community Safety Manager said, "Working together in partnership has shown that together we can continue to reduce alcohol related violent crime in the Borough.
"This has meant fewer people ending up in hospital or having their Christmas's ruined than ever before. As a partnership we will continue to work towards making Hinckley and indeed the whole Borough a safe and welcoming place to live, work and visit."
