14 January 2009 Chairman visits local primary school

Photo Opportunity: The Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, Tony Kershaw and his wife Freda will be meeting staff and pupils at Christ Church and St Peter's Primary School on Rothley Road  in Mountsorrel this week.  He will be at the school on Friday 16th January at 10am.  The school has recently undergone a successful inspection by Ofsted and is said to be good.

Ofsted inspectors commented that pupils are happy at the school and greatly enjoy coming to this good school.  They also said that good leadership and management have helped the school to continue to improve.

Whilst at the school, the Chairman, will attend assembly and present some certificates to children for sustained good work.  He will then meet with members of the school council who will discuss the latest plans for developing the school grounds.  The children will also have the opportunity to talk to the Chairman to compare how the school Council and the County Council operate ie. elections, procedures etc.

Mr Kershaw will also be taken on a tour of the school and will have the opportunity to view the new Mountsorrel Surestart Children's Centre which is on the school site.  The new centre was opened in October of last year.

Tony Kershaw, Chairman of the County Council, said:

"This is a fabulous school and I am pleased that Ofsted have recognised all the good work that the school does.  The school council is a marvellous way of involving children in the decision making process of school life and both Freda and I had a wonderful time meeting and talking to everyone."

Sandy Gourlay, Headteacher at the school, said:

"I would like to emphasise the strong team ethic at work here.  We have a fantastic group of hardworking staff who are so very talented at getting the best out of pupils.  We all have the children's best interests at heart and I am delighted that Ofsted and the local community feel they are well served by a good school."
