12 January 2009 Work begins in Watermead! - photo opportunity -

Work on giving footpaths and cycle links in Watermead Country Park a major facelift has now begun.

The improvements are part of the £1.4 million Sustrans Connect2 project which won a share of £50 million Big Lottery Fund grant in December 2007 in a public vote.

Over the next five years, significant work will be carried out on paths and trails in and around the park. This will improve links into the park including crossings at busy roads as well as bridges which will be transformed to make them accessible to all.

The first work to be completed will be a new hard surfaced path - currently a grass route, between Johnson’s Bridge and Thurmaston Lock Bridge.

To mark the start of the work, Chairman of the Connect2 Steering Group, Ernie White, will visit the park to see how construction is going and lend a hand.

The paperwork that launched the project was signed last month at Eastfield Primary School, in Thurmaston, one of many local schools to back the project during the public vote.

Mr White said: “We are delighted that work is finally underway – it’s been a long wait since the public voted overwhelming for the Connect2 project.”

“The project will provide important links into and through the park for commuters, school children and all park users.”

Patrick Davis, Area Manager for Sustrans, said: “We are extremely pleased to be making this significant step towards completing the scheme in Leicestershire.

“In this era of rising concern about the health of individuals and our environment, enabling more journeys to be made by foot and bike can only benefit our community."

Keep updated on the Connect2 project in Watermead Country Park
