Highways, Transportation & Waste Management
Work to bring in congestion-busting measures at a busy Enderby roundabout gets underway early next week.
The County Council is spending £1million on the Foxhunter project and will create extra lanes, new cycle lanes and revamp crossings.
The changes to the roundabout – at the junction of the B4114 with the B582, will cut traffic queues, improve safety as well as ease congestion at the hot-spot and include:
- new ‘toucan’ pedestrian and cycle crossings on Blaby Road and St Johns
- revamping the existing pedestrian crossings on Blaby Road and Leicester Road near the roundabout .
- extra lanes to boost vehicle capacity
- changing the traffic signal timings to help reduce queues and allow time for pedestrians and cyclists to cross
The new lay-out will ease problems for residents caused by rat-running traffic - pedestrians, cyclists and pupils will also benefit from significantly improved crossings over the key junctions.
Nicholas Rushton, Deputy Leader of the County Council, said: “This £1million key work will be a tremendous boost to the thousands of drivers who use this busy route every day and also provide welcome relief for villagers.
“The improvements, along with the new park and ride, will help to improve journeys, cut queues and significantly improve traffic conditions in the area.”
Construction will start during next week (week beginning 12 January). The improvements are set to be completed by late spring this year.
Some disruption is inevitable but the work will be carefully co-ordinated to keep this to a minimum - disruptive work will be avoided during peak hours and when possible, work will take place seven days a week to shorten the overall construction period.
