Leicestershire Councty Council Cabinet Office

5 January 2009 County provides good services for children, says Ofsted

A report which shows Leicestershire County Council is providing good services for children and young people will be considered next week.

Leicestershire’s ruling Cabinet will discuss Ofsted’s annual performance assessment of the children and young people’s service, which is responsible for education and social care.

The report ranks Leicestershire’s service as good overall, with outstanding ratings for its capacity to improve, its management and making a positive contribution.

Ivan Ould, Cabinet member for children and young people, said: "I’m pleased that we are performing well and have outstanding prospects for further improvements.

"I'd like to pay tribute to the hard work and diligence of our staff, in maintaining these standards."

Key strengths include:

• Outstanding standards at the end of key stage three – well above the national average and similar councils in English, maths and science

• Prompt and effective action to improve schools, so fewer are placed in Ofsted categories of concern

• An outstanding range and quality of youth services

• Effective preventative work, resulting in lower numbers of children being looked after by the council – the fifth lowest nationally.

No major areas of weakness were identified, but the Council has agreed with Ofsted that some further improvement is needed in some areas, including:

• Children and young people make less progress at key stage four than at key stage three

• Fixed term exclusions for secondary school pupils with special educational needs statements are rising

The Cabinet will discuss the report at 2.30pm on January 13.
