23 December 2008 Don’t drink and drive this Christmas

People celebrating over the festive period are reminded of the serious penalties if caught driving whilst over the drink-drive limit.

Tragically over 3,000 people are killed or seriously injured on Britain’s roads each year in drink drive related crashes.

Staggeringly almost 100,000 drivers are convicted each year of drinking and driving and over half a million breath tests are administered.

People caught driving whilst under the influence of alcohol face a fine and minimum 12 month driving ban.

Nicholas Rushton, Deputy Leader of the County Council said: “With the festive celebrations underway it is important to keep the ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’ message in the minds of every driver.

“If we are to avoid death and injury on the roads of Leicestershire over the holiday period, we need to convince everyone that driving and alcohol do not mix.”

Inspector Vivienne Brenchley of Leicestershire Constabulary’s Road Policing Unit said: “Last year 27 collisions occurred over the Christmas period in Leicestershire as a result of drink driving. Any alcohol can affect your ability to drive, impairing your reaction time and your ability to judge both speed and distance.

"Drivers should always be aware that alcohol takes effect quickly but wears off slowly - so even if you don't drive until the next morning after a night out, your driving can still be impaired.

"Officers will be breathalysing any motorist who they believe may be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. So far, in the first two weeks of our Christmas crackdown, a total of 52 motorists were arrested for drink driving. They now face a minimum 12 month driving ban and a fine.”

•Nearly one in six of all deaths on the road involve drivers who are over the legal alcohol limit.

•Drinking and driving occurs across a wide range of age groups but particularly among young men aged 17-29 in both casualties and positive breath tests following a collision. The Government's most recent drink drive campaigns aims to target this group.

•The legal limit in the UK is 80 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

•But there is no failsafe guide as to how much you can drink and stay under the limit - it can depend on many factors such as the amount and type of alcoholic drink, weight, sex, age, food intake and metabolism.

•The only safe option is not to drink any alcohol if you plan to drive and never offer an alcoholic drink to anyone else who is driving.

•Alcohol affects your ability to drive safely as your reaction times are impaired and you're unable to judge speed and distances.

•People who drive at twice the current legal alcohol level are at least 50 times more likely to be involved in a fatal car crash.
