18 December 2008 Long Field building plans given the green light

Exciting £5 million plans to extend Long Field School in Melton Mowbray have been given the go-ahead.

Planning permission was granted by the County Council’s Development Control and Regulatory Board today (Thursday, December 18th).

The new development will include:

  • A brand new state-of-the-art sports hall with changing rooms and a viewing area.  The new sports hall will help Long Field to deliver BTEC and GCSE PE and develop plans for a new vocational diploma dedicated to sport and a new sports physiotherapy course
  • A dedicated Year 7 base with up-to-date classrooms with excellent ICT facilities that will have flexible walls which can be moved to suit different activities. There will also be an open space for assemblies, demonstrations and performances with a parents’ café
  • An exciting new two-floor Learning Resource Centre, with full library facilities and new work stations and specialist teaching room for media studies
  • A new extension dedicated to design and technology.  This will include a special IT hub for pupils to develop their design skills
  • An inclusion area for pupils that need extra support, including dedicated space for teaching small groups
  • An extension to the school’s dining room including a cyber-café area
  • A new area for staff development and training.

Long Field is one of the partner schools in the £45 million reorganisation of education in Melton Mowbray and the Vale of Belvoir.  This aims to raise standards of education and achievement, building on current school excellence.

As part of the reorganisation, Long Field will retain pupils until they finish their GCSEs and be a partner in the new Post-16 Centre to be built on the King Edward VII campus.

Rob Garrett, headteacher at Long Field School, said: “I am delighted that the plans have been given the go-ahead.  These are very exciting times here at Long Field.  We will have a tremendous new school extension and there are to be new curriculum choices for students here and across the partner schools.”

Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet Lead Member for the Children and Young People’s Service, said: “This is another step forward for the local schools’ re-organisation.  I look forward to seeing the new building take shape and the opportunities it will bring for students in the area.”
