25 November 2008 Taxis drive home food waste message

Two new, 'fruity' taxis are spreading the 'love food hate waste' message across Leicestershire.

The vehicles are the first of their kind in Britain and feature eye-catching images of pears and tomatoes on either side.

Part of a county-wide campaign, they are designed to raise awareness of the amount of food wasted in Leicestershire.

The Leicestershire Waste Partnership initiative supports the national love food hate waste campaign run by WRAP (Waste Resources Action Programme).

It is hoped that the taxi idea, paid for with money awarded by WRAP, could be taken up by other local authorities.

Leicestershire households produce almost 3kg of food waste per household per week - this equates to throwing away 390 tins of baked beans every year. This food waste usually ends up going to landfill but around 60% of the food thrown away could actually be prevented.

Nicholas Rushton, County Council Deputy Leader and Chairman of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: "The taxis are a novel way of encouraging people to support the campaign and think about cutting the amount of food waste.

"Simple steps such as storing food correctly, cooking the right proportions and using up leftovers can make a big difference."

Love food hate waste highlights the extent of just how much food is wasted and offers practical advice and recipes which help make the most of the food people buy.

The campaign encourages some simple planning techniques like checking the fridge and store cupboard before going shopping and making the most of leftovers.

People are also being asked to send in recipes for using up leftovers - the top 50 will be published in a cook book. As well as attending an awards ceremony, the creators of the top three recipes will receive shopping vouchers with the first prize being worth £150.

The Partnership has successfully secured over £100,000 worth of funding from WRAP for the next two years of the campaign.
