24 November 2008 Road safety starts early at school

Primary school children in Anstey have been taking their First Steps on a road safety course.

The five and six year olds, from Woolden Hill Primary School, are learning how to cross the road safely, with the help of Leicestershire County Council.

Road Safety Tutors Liz Peutherer and Lucy Whiteford, and their School Crossing Patrol, or "lollipop lady", Sue Iliffe have been teaching safety messages to the youngsters.

First Steps has been developed by the County Council and is one of the first  schemes in the UK to have School Crossing Patrols and Road Safety Tutors working together to train young people on staying safe.

The scheme involves children and volunteers from the school walking to nearby roads where they learn about traffic, road markings and dangers they might face. They then learn to cross the road, with the help of school volunteers. The children cross both with and without the assistance of "lollipop lady" Sue.

Nicholas Rushton, Deputy Leader of the County Council, with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “It is important to start learning all skills for life early as possible, and crossing the road safely is no exception. This is the first time that our School Crossing Patrols and Road Safety Tutors have teamed up to give training.”

Coleen Shepherd, head teacher of Woolden Hill, said: "The children are really enjoying the course and the First Steps training is proving to be a very practical way to learn. Having Sue help out on the course is a good way of demonstrating to the children the important role that a School Crossing Patrol plays in their journey to school.”
