21 November 2008 Exciting proposal for Melton campus

Leicestershire County Council and Brooksby Melton College are working together on an exciting proposal which could see the college locating a new building on the King Edward VII campus.

Such a development would see the new college building located with the new Post-16 Centre and the new King Edward VII School on the same site – creating a tremendous campus for students in Melton Mowbray and the surrounding area.

Co-locating the new college building, Post-16 Centre and King Edward VII School will enable them to strengthen their work together, co-ordinate the learning opportunities for students and make better use of the facilities available.

For example, Brooksby Melton College and King Edward VII School are already working together to provide new diplomas for 14 to 19-year-olds in engineering and creative and media studies.  Another 15 diplomas are due to be made available by 2013 across the Melton and Vale of Belvoir schools’ partnership.

Brooksby Melton College would still go-ahead with its plans to redevelop its Brooksby Hall site, with the development on the King Edward VII site replacing plans to redevelop the college’s Asfordby Road site.

Further discussions will be taking place between the County Council and the College about the proposal.

Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet Lead Member for the Chidren and Young People’s Service, said: “There are many exciting developments as part of the reorganisation of education in Melton Mowbray and the Vale of Belvoir, including new and refurbished school buildings and wider curriculum opportunities for students.

“The proposal to locate the Brooksby College building on the King Edward VII site represents a tremendous step forward, providing even more opportunities for students in the area and helping to create a campus that will be a superb centre for learning in Melton.”

Chris Ball, Interim Principal at Brooksby Melton College, said: “Moving the College to the King Edward VII campus will be of clear benefit to students in the area.  There is still a lot of work to be done, but we are very excited about the proposal.”
