10 November 2008 Top ranking for Leicestershire's recycling

Residents’ commitment to recycling has helped Leicestershire retain its position as one of the top performing counties in the country.

New figures released by DEFRA show that Leicestershire is the fourth best county nationally with a recycling and composting rate of 48.44% - an improvement of over 5% on last year.

As part of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, the County Council has been collaborating with District Council partners to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill through improvements to kerbside recycling and facilities at recycling and household waste sites.

Over the past year, residents have been urged to embrace waste-free packed lunches, compost kitchen waste by installing a green cone or food waste digester and become a 'community composting champion'. Waste Prevention advisors have also been talking to residents at road shows on the merits of reducing packaging, using reusable bags and swapping to real nappies.

Nicholas Rushton, County Council Deputy Leader and Chairman of Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: “This fantastic result is a credit to the people of Leicestershire who have really supported us and our district partners in our efforts to recycle and compost more.

"As we approach Christmas I would encourage everyone to keep an eye out for the campaigns we will be running which will give tips on how to reduce waste over this festive period."
