7 November 2008 Multi-million pound bid to boost schools

Schools across Leicestershire could receive a multi-million pound revamp, after the Government invited the County Council to bid for cash.

Loughborough and Quorn could be first in line for a £80 million revamp, followed by Hinckley and Earl Shilton and North West Leicestershire and Shepshed.

The first schools could be refurbished or rebuilt by 2014, if the County Council makes a successful bid to the Building Schools for the Future fund - three years earlier than expected under previous guidance.

Ivan Ould, Cabinet member for schools, said: “I hope ministers back our bid to give children the best possible schools and the best possible education.

“We hope to get several waves of investment, to improve schools right across the county.

"Parents in Loughborough and Quorn have been campaigning for changes to secondary education in their area. This bid gives us an opportunity to look at this issue.”

At the moment, the County Council is spending £45 million to transform secondary schools in Melton and the Vale of Belvoir, to provide modern facilities for pupils, increase choice and improve results.

The County Council’s Cabinet will discuss the report at 2.30pm on November 14.
