Leicestershire children have been gold medal winners and record-breaking reading champions over the summer.
Over 8,500 children successfully completed the summer reading challenge, Team Read, which took place in libraries all over Leicestershire, and won their very own gold medal.
Team Read was the County Council's most successful reading challenge yet with a record 10% more children taking up the challenge and a 20% rise in children successfully completing it.
The challenge was to read six or more books over the summer and children enjoyed visiting their local library to choose them and collect stickers on their way to winning their gold medal. Those who successfully completed the challenge were also entered into a prize draw and several lucky children won prizes kindly donated by: Alliance and Leicester, Leicestershire County Cricket Club, Alton Towers and Melton Twin Lakes Park.
Issues of children's books over the summer period increased by 12.5% from last year and the reading challenge was certainly very popular with the children taking part.
Ernie White, Cabinet Member for Community Services said: " We were extremely pleased with the success of the Team Read. It is encouraging to see so many children enjoying books and reading and we look forward to another exciting reading challenge next summer".
Further information about what's happening in libraries in the National Year of Reading and information about the most popular children's books over the summer can be found on the county council's website www.leics.gov/libraries

Background notes
Libraries across Leicestershire are seeing an increase in visitors as the UK finds itself in a ‘credit crunch’ and possibly heads into recession. Traditionally, people turn to public libraries during hard economic times - for cheaper entertainment, to help with employment, for free access to computers and to help them save money and be ‘greener’ by borrowing free books rather than buying.
Leicestershire Libraries have seen vast improvements recently as part of the £8 million transformation programme and staff are inviting the public to step into their local library to discover all the up to date services and facilities available for no or little cost.
Visitors will be supported by libraries over the coming months in their health, wellbeing, career prospects, lifestyle and general enjoyment by:
- Stepping up to savings and improving finances – a free internet service where all the consumer price comparison and information websites are available, there are free books to borrow and you can have a cheap night in with a DVD that you can keep for a week
- Stepping Up to success and improving job prospects – with free newspapers, free internet facilities and a large choice of titles for all sorts of learning and development
- Stepping Out - alone or with friends and family to free events ’’
- Stepping Into the library’s welcoming surroundings where you can read all the latest best sellers for free and get up to date DVDs and audiobooks.
- Stepping Up to a challenge - train your brain with crosswords, Sudoku and general knowledge quizzes.
