78 arrested as part of Christmas Drink and Drug Drive Campaign

A total of 78 motorists will be relying on taxis and public transport in 2009 after being caught drink driving in the first three weeks of December.

In addition to a minimum 12 month driving ban, they could also be fined up to £5,000.

Leicestershire Constabulary's Christmas Drink and Drug Drive Campaign runs from Monday December 1 to Thursday January 1. In just the first three weeks 72 men and six women have been arrested for driving whilst under the influence. Of those a third (a total of 26) are under the age of 25.

Inspector Viv Brenchley from the Force's Road Policing Unit, said: "Once again it is very disappointing to see so many people getting behind the wheel whilst over the limit. Clearly they think they will get away with it, but these 78 motorists prove that isn't the case.

"This Christmas and New Year officers will not hesitate to stop any motorist who they have reason to believe is driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. That driver will be breathalysed and if they test positive will be arrested and taken to a police station. If convicted they will have a criminal record, a driving ban and a fine. They will have to explain themselves to their family and friends and the conviction could affect their job or their future prospects.

"If you are going out this Christmas and you intend to drink, please leave your car at home, book a taxi or make alternative arrangements and help us to make the roads a safer place."

Drivers have been stopped and breathalysed round the clock during December. Out of the 78 motorists arrested, 10 were stopped between 6am and 6pm, 15 between 6pm and 10pm and a total of 53 between 10pm and 6am.

Leicestershire Constabulary is encouraging anyone with information about people who are drinking or driving to report them to police by calling (0116) 222 2222 or Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
